Defending champion Halifax City salvaged a point today in a 1:1 draw with EPR Kirby/The Dock at the 2009 BMO National Championships Jubilee Trophy competition. After falling 0:3 to cross-city rival Halifax Dunbrack on the opening day, Halifax City came indoors to even last year's fourth-place team from Newfoundland Labrador. Nichole Adams opened the scoring in the first 15 seconds; Halifax City's Allison Read countered in the 48th minute.
Halifax City won last year Jubilee Trophy competition in St. John's, NL, finishing first ahead of Ontario North London Galaxy, British Columbia's Surrey United and Newfoundland Labrador's EPR Kirby/The Dock. All four teams are back for the 2009 competition in Saskatoon.
While Halifax City and EPR Kirby/The Dock drew 1:1, Edmonton Victoria won 1:0 over Halifax Dunbrack. Darcie Kutruk scored in the first minute from 20 yards out, completing a nice sequence of one-time passes from her Edmonton teammates. Veronique Mayer nearly made it 2-0 late in the first half, but she was stopped by the crossbar. Edmonton settled for the 1:0 victory.
In Group B, North London Galaxy won 1:0 over Winnipeg South End United thanks to a goal by teenager Shelina Zadorsky. Zadorsky scored the lone goal in the 41st minute. In the other match, Surrey United played to a 0:0 draw with host Saskatoon NATA.
The 2009 Jubilee Trophy competition runs this 8-12 October in Saskatoon, SK. The eight teams in the tournament will play three matches against group opponents (Group A and Group B) from 8-11 October. All eight teams will then play on 12 October to determine their final ranking.
